Robert Capa is world famous. Even people to whom his name, his appearance, or his function as co-founder of the MAGNUM photo agency are unknown, are nevertheless familiar with his work: his photos of the Normandy landings, of the Spanish Civil War or his portraits of celebrities. What only few people know: Robert Capa is an invention – created by Gerda Pohorylle, a young German woman who was persecuted by the Nazis and emigrated penniless to Paris. Here she meets and ultimately falls in love with the talented but equally penniless photographer André Friedmann. But Gerda has had enough of poverty. It is time for something to change. She invents Robert Capa, a successful American photographer who charges horrendous sums for his work. She cuts André’s hair, dresses him elegantly and lets him impersonate Capa to the outside world, where he sell his and Gerda’s work under the label Capa.
