Money Town

Maneno, is a seemingly idyllic village in rural Kenya. It’s the kind of place where neighbors might as well be family. No one has much money in Maneno but they get by. They share what they have and laugh together when there’s nothing to share. LEL, the new Village Headman, is the town’s fiercest, most capable defender. She keeps Maneno running, no matter what it costs her personally. Because this place, these people, are where she feels safest. Initially, when Maneno receives a massive Universal Basic Income grant, the people are overjoyed. It allows the villagers to pursue their dreams and harebrained schemes. But very quickly, the new money introduces self-interest and suspicion into the town for the first time. Neighbors become rivals, friends become competitors, buried grievances resurface and relationships shatter. As the threads of community and interdependence threaten to come apart, Lel must fight to hold her community together.
