La Palma portrays a number of people who, for various reasons, are in one of the world’s largest holiday paradises. In the face of a looming catastrophe, their lives and destinies are affected by the violent forces of nature. We meet ordinary tourists who have traveled to the Canary Islands to experience the dream of sun, summer, beach and Sangria, a headstrong scientist no one believes in, resident Scandinavians who get their world turned upside down and a woman who smuggles her last load of drugs.

The disaster brings out both the best and the worst in them. Some meet themselves at the door, others find powers they did not think they had. Relationships are put to the test, but new and surprising alliances also emerge. Some of our characters die, and those who survive will be changed forever.

When the airspace closes, the lava presses on and the eruption of the volcano on the island of La Palma creates complete chaos, a battle against the clock begins for everyone. Those who do not get to the only safe place in the Canary Islands face a certain death. Our heroes must fight through lawless conditions, toxic ash eruptions, lava flows – and a Tsunami that the world has never seen before!

SCANDISASTER
Back in 2005, Fantefilm’s vision was written;
Fantefilm Fiksjon AS shall aim to produce great film experiences for a wide audience. The projects will be clearly genre-based feature films. They should be based on strong characters set in dramatic situations. The films must contain one or more factors that make them distinctive in the Norwegian sense.

With LA PALMA, we want to keep the same starting point that has given us such great success in the past.
Through three disaster films (The Wave and The Quake, and soon the North Sea) we have shown that this genre, with its Scandinavian twist, has managed to tell stories that the audience likes and recognizes themselves in. Our « heroes » are ordinary people from our own Scandinavian everyday life, put in unthinkable scenarios and they must act accordingly. We are always close to the characters, and have tried to avoid the perspectives from the « presidential level », but instead worked to get as close as possible to the ordinary people who are in the middle of the disaster. With scandisaster, we have created a genre where we combine suspense and plot with spectacular scenes, while keeping the focus on the characters and drama in the story.

FANTEFILM
Fantefilm was established in 1997, making it one of the oldest production companies in Norway. Fantefilm aspires to produce larger than life movies for a wide-ranging cinema audience. We aim to make our projects easily recognizable within their respective genres, with an emphasis on multi-layered characters put in extraordinary situations.

The company’s first feature film, Cold Prey broke the Norwegian box office records for the hor- ror/slasher genre. Ten years later The Wave hit Norwegian theatres and became one of the big- gest Norwegian-produced box office hits ever. Its sequel The Quake (2018) became the number one box office hit of 2018. With these movies, and the upcoming The North Sea (2021), Fantefilm has developed a new sub-genre, aptly called “Scandisaster”. Inspired by Hollywood’s passion for genre film, and the inclusion of well-developed, three dimensional characters to these stories, Fantefilm has introduced disaster films to Scandinavia.
