DOMINIQUE SIMONNOT – PRISON IN TV SERIES

From Oz to A Prophet, do screenwriters take liberties?

Prisons have long served as a compelling backdrop for both creators and audiences, offering a concentrated look at the human condition. Iconic American dramas such as Oz, Prison Break, and Orange Is the New Black, as well as European works closer to our own judicial systems, such as the gritty British series Time, the French drama 3 x Manon, and the recent television adaptation of A Prophet, transform this closed environment into a stage defined by power dynamics, violence, and the complex journeys of both inmates and staff.

These series frequently tackle systemic inequality, the challenges of rehabilitation, and the search for alternatives to incarceration, as seen in the German drama A Better Place. However, how closely do these fictional portrayals align with the harsh realities of life behind bars?

Dominique Simonnot, France’s General Controller of Places of Deprivation of Liberty and contributor to the podcast Les enfermé.e.s, will examine the social and political questions raised by these shows. From detention conditions and human rights to the realities of reintegration, she will analyze the impact of prison fiction through her unique professional lens.

The discussion will be moderated by journalist Arnaud Laporte (France Culture).
