Starting with the coup d’état of 23 February 1981 in Spain, the series dissects one of the crucial moments in Spain’s recent history: the transition to democracy. When Civil Guard Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Tejero entered Congress with his weapon drawn, only three men remained seated: Adolfo Suárez, Santiago Carrillo and Gutiérrez Mellado. Through these three men who led the transition to democracy and the three main instigators of the coup, the series retraces the series of events and tensions that almost led Spain back to the old military regime.

Our take

A masterful adaptation of Javier Cercas’ non-fiction novel, The Anatomy of a Moment dissects Spain’s failed 1981 coup d’état with surgical precision. Leading the cast, a commanding Álvaro Morte (Money Heist) steps into the shoes of Prime Minister Adolfo Suárez. This elegantly directed political thriller by Alberto Rodriguez (Marshland) plunges us into the heart of a nation on the brink. A major series and a powerful reminder that democracy sometimes hangs by a thread.
