Nuclear Sunset Cruise

Never before in history had humanity come so close to blowing itself up than during the Cuban Missile Crisis, from October 14 to 28, 1962. The Americans were shocked to discover the USSR had sneakily set up nuclear missiles in Cuba, pushing the Cold War from chilly to scorching hot in record time. Within days, everything was spiraling out of control: John F. Kennedy slapped a naval blockade around Cuba, cutting off the island's supply of everything from coffee to cigars. Meanwhile, the more trigger-happy folks in the U.S. government practically begged him to invade Cuba immediately! Khrushchev, never one to back down, fired up his nuclear submarines. Nuclear war? Very much on the table. But while these two superpowers were flexing their muscles, something else was happening: the GDR (yep, East Germany) proudly sent off its very first cruise ship from the port of Warnemünde.
