In a fading German enclave outside of São Paulo, Christmas brings an unexpected guest. FREDDIE WEBER—a 32-year-old Berlin punk and record store clerk—follows his architect boyfriend LEANDRO SANTOS home for the first time, determined to charm a family he can’t understand. Despite his lack of Portuguese, Freddie finds an unexpected ally in 88-year-old ERWIN MÜLLER, Leandro’s step-grandfather who left Germany in the 1960s. Most of his German-speaking friends in the neighborhood have died, so Erwin is eager to switch to his mother tongue. But with each exchange, Freddie senses disturbing patterns beneath Erwin’s dignified exterior—patterns that remind him of fascist ideologies he’s sworn to fight. When Freddie discovers a 1975 photograph showing Erwin smiling among known Nazi collaborators and Brazilian dictatorship officials, his suspicions crystallize into unavoidable truth.
